The Chix Varsity Football team traveled to Hamilton Friday night to close out regular season play against the Hawkeyes. Hamilton received the opening kickoff and marched 63 yards in 11 plays to take an early 7 - 0 lead. But the Chix quickly returned the favor and then some, scoring 3 unanswered touchdowns in the first half to lead 20-7 at halftime. The first touchdown was scored on a 6 yard run by Jr. WR Isaiah Boonstra, who earlier in the drive had a 58 yard catch and run reception from Jr. QB Will Drnek to set-up the Chix in scoring position. Late in the 2nd Qtr. the Chix used a couple of End-Around-Runs to score touchdowns. The first touchdown was scored by Sr. WR Kolter Rotman, who raced into the endzone from 12 yards out. After the Rotman catch on the 2 Pt Conv, the Chix led 14-7. On the next Hamilton possession, the Chix defense held firm and got the ball back deep in Hamilton territory. The Chix scored their 3rd touchdown of the half on an Isaiah Strom 15 yards run and the lead increased to 13 points, 20-7 at halftime.
In the 2nd half, the Hawkeyes scored their 2nd touchdown of the game to trim the Chix lead to 20-14. But the Chix would not be denied. Midway through the 4th Qtr. the defense held and the Chix got the ball on the Hamilton 30 yard line. 5 plays later, Sr RB Peyton Davis scored from 1 yard out to give the Chix a 2 touchdown lead at 28-14. Hamilton was able to score a touchdown late in game on a long pass to trim the lead to 28-21, but the Chix defense held on for the big win.
Leading the offense was QB Drnek, who completed 14 of 17 passes for 227 yards. Jr. WR Isaiah Boonstra led the Chix in receptions with 7 catches and 161 yards, including 2 highlight real catches, one of 58 yards and a second one for 52 yards. Sr. RB Jack Kamphuis ran the ball for 45 yards and caught 3 passes for 19 yards, while Jr RB Payton Sackett rushed the ball for 42 yards for the Chix.
Defensively, the Chix were led by Sr LB Derek Baxter, who recorded 11 tackles in the game. Sr. LB Ben DeLost recorded 10 stops while Sr. LB Peyton Davis added 9 tackles and 2 tackles-for-loss in the game. Sr. DT Isaiah Jones had 7 tackles in the victory while Jr. DE Zeek Ramadhani had 4 tackles, a sack and 4 QB pressures. Sr. DB Cameron Jaworowski added 5 tackles and an interception in the game.
With the win, the Chix record improves to 6-3 on the season. The Chix are back in action Friday night, October 31 in the opening round of the MHSAA playoffs. The Chix will travel to St. Joseph and take on the Bears, who enter the game with a 5 -4 record on the season. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm.
