Zeeland East Athletics Junior Varsity vs Unity Christian High School (36 - 32) Win The JV Chix traveled to Hudsonville to take on the Unity Christian Crusaders Thursday on a beautiful night for football. The Chix took the lead early in the 2nd quarter and never trailed in the contest. Each team had possession of the ball a couple times in the first quarter, but neither team could score. In the 2nd quarter, The Chix broke the deadlock on a 2 yard touchdown plunge by Freshman RB Avett Whitmyer and after the successful 2-pt conv catch by Soph Hunter VanZyll, the Chix lead 8-0. On the ensuing play, Soph K John Jeffries squibbed the kickoff and it was fumbled by Unity player and recovered by Chix Freshman DL Drew Taylor and the Chix had the ball again. The Chix took advantage of the Unity miscue & scored their 2nd rushing TD of the game on a 2 yard run by Avett Whitmyer and the Chix led 14-0. After a Unity touchdown, the Chix got the ball again and quickly moved down the field as time was running out in the 2nd quarter and scored again on a hard fought 3 yard run by Freshman Avett Whitmyer, his 3rd touchdown of the half, and the Chix led 22-8 at halftime. The Chix were the beneficiary of 4 Unity turnovers in the 1st half, with 3 fumbles and an interception. In the 2nd Half, the Crusaders eliminated their turnovers that plagued them in the 1st half and used their high-powered, big-play offense to score 4 touchdowns against the Chix. The Chix were able to hold the Crusaders from scoring on all 4 conversion after TD attempts, which was a key factor in their victory. The Chix were also able to go on 2 long scoring drives in the 2nd half to seal the victory. The first drive was a 12 play, 54 yard drive, taking up almost 6 minutes of game time in the 3rd Qtr., and the Chix scored on a 21 yard catch and run from Soph QB. Hudson Lamer to Soph WR. Finn "McMissle" McGovern, who carried multiple Unity defenders into the endzone. The 2nd touchdown came late in the 4th Qtr., as Soph Mikah Jones darted into the endzone from 9 yards away. After the successful 2-pt conversion, the Chix led by 10 points with 3 minutes to play. The scoring drive consumed 7 minutes of game clock on the 14 play drive, as the Chix converted two 4th down plays and one 3rd down play to keep the drive moving. With the win, the Chix move to 4-1 on the season, 1-1 in OK Gold conference games. The Chix returned by home as they host the Dux from Zeeland West next Thursday, October 1 at 6:30 pm at Zeeland Stadium.
