Hammond to coach the CHIX

After a lengthy and extensive process, we are thrilled to announce that Troy Hammond will be the next coach of the Zeeland East Girls Basketball Program.  Hammond will be taking over the program from Kale Maupin, who faithfully served as the varsity basketball coach the previous two seasons.  

Coach Hammond has spent the last seven years serving as the head varsity basketball coach at East Grand Rapids.  During this time he compiled a record of 118-39, including being named Regional Coach of the Year in 2020.  Prior to his time at East Grand Rapids, Hammond was the girls varsity basketball coach at Forest Hills Eastern for three years.  He has coached some of the top talent in the state, including the 2023 Miss Basketball Winner.  

Troy’s experience, vision for the entire program, and ability to form relationships with his student-athletes stood out to us throughout the interview process.  We can’t wait to see him put his imprint on our program as we strive to provide excellent experiences for our student-athletes that are rooted in integrity.  

Coming to Zeeland is a homecoming for Hammond as he graduated from Zeeland West in 2010.  Hammond currently teaches at Mona Shores Middle School but will transition to a teaching position at ZPS next fall.  He had the following to say about the new opportunity:

“It is such a privilege to have the opportunity to return to my hometown and coach the Zeeland East Girls Basketball Team. I want to thank Jessica Knoth and Josh Glerum for their belief in me and for the investment in the program. I’m excited to meet the team and ready to hit the ground running. Go CHIX!”

Hammond will be meeting with returning student-athletes on Monday, May 20th at 3:00pm, in the back of the Zeeland East Cafeteria.
