The Chix varsity baseball team traveled to Wayland Union on Friday afternoon for opening day of the 2018 season.  Zeeland East used power pitching and timely hitting to secure the victory by a score of 11-0 in 5 innings.  

Zeeland East pitchers, Adam Berghorst, Zach DeGraaf and Clayton Cochran combined to strike out 13 batters and only allow 2 hits in the game.  Berghorst receives the win pitching 2 innings and striking out 6.  DeGraaf also threw 2 innings, striking out 5.  Cochran finished the game with 2 k’s of his own in the final inning.

Offensively, the Chix were lead by Kainan Bayn who had 3 hits including 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and 3RBI.  Bayn broke the game open in the third inning hitting a bases loaded double off the top of the left field fence.  Also having a big day in his varsity debut was freshman Ethan Houghtaling who was 2-2 with 2 walks.  Zach DeGraaf added an RBI double while Caleb Hansen was hit by pitch twice.

Zeeland East will take a 1-0 record into spring break before returning to action on April 10.
