Zeeland East completed their OK Green conference season on Thursday by defeating Reeths-Puffer 6-3.  The Chix finished 20-1 in the conference, winning 19 straight games and finishing alone in first place.  Zeeland West finished in second place with a 16-5 record, while Mona Shores (15-6) finished third and Reeths-Puffer finished fourth at 14-7.

On Thursday Zeeland East was able to record their 20th win in the league and 30th overall while honoring their 15 seniors.  The Chix jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on three straight singles by Luke Gruppen, Jeff Agar and Ethan Houghtaling.  The Chix then lost the lead in the 4th inning when the Rockets scored 3 runs on 3 errors, a passed ball and a balk.  Trailing 3-1, Zeeland East tied the game with three singles in a row by Riley Wilson, Brand Claerbaut and Brooks Huizenga to score two runs.  The Chix were able to tack on 3 more in the bottom of the 6th to finish the game 6-3.

Offensively, Luke Gruppen recorded 3 hits while Riley Wilson added a pair.  Brandon Claerbaut had an RBI and scored two runs.

On the mound Ethan Houghtaling fired a complete game no hitter.  Even though the Rockets scratched 3 unearned runs, they did not record a hit.  Houghtaling broke the single season strikeout record in the game which was 86 in a season, originally heald by Michael Meade.  Houghtaling tallied 14 strikeouts in the game and now sits at 96 on the season.  He also finishes a perfect 7-0 in conference.  He and fellow pitcher, Caleb Schrotenboer, have each tied the single season school record for wins by a pitcher with 7.

Most importantly the Chix have tied their best wins total in school history with a 30-5 record.  Zeeland East finished 30-9 in 2016, which was also their last conference championship.  Zeeland East looks to break the record tomorrow when they travel to Davenport to play a doubleheader with East Kentwood.
