The Chix traveled to West Ottawa High School on Friday night to play the Zeeland West Dux in the District Final. In front of large, energetic crowd, the Dux won their first Boys Basketball District title over the Chix 53-42.
The Dux got off to a fast start against the Chix and led 12-0 midway through the First Quarter. The Chix settled down and closed the quarter on a 6-4 run to trail the Dux 16-6 after 1 period of play. The Chix continued the comeback theme, outscoring the Dux 14-10 in the 2nd quarter to trail only by 6 points heading into Halftime, 26-20. The Dux played stingy defense in the 3rd quarter, limiting the Chix to only 6 points and the Dux extended their lead 10 points, 36-26. In the 4th quarter, the Dux pulled away to open up an 18 point lead late in the game. But the Chix didn't show any quit and battled to trim the Dux lead to 11 points, but time ran out with the Dux winning the game, 53-42.
Leading the way for the Chix in his last game in the brown and gold uniform was Senior Layne Risdon, who tallied 17 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and added 3 steals. Junior BJ Walker added 11 points and 4 rebounds, while Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut scored 8 points, going 2-2 behind the 3-point arch. Freshmen Will Drnek continued his strong late season play with 4 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Junior Will VerSteeg chipped in with 2 free throws for 2 points for the Chix.
