The Chix traveled to Holland to play the Holland High Dutch at the Historic Dutch Dome on Friday night in an OK Black Conference match up. The game was marked by a series of scoring runs by both teams, with the Chix making the final run to win the game 60-46.
In the first quarter, the Chix started the game on a 6-0 run to take an early lead. After a Dutch timeout, the Dutch came back with a 17-7 scoring run of their own to finish the first quarter with a 17-13 lead. In the 2nd quarter, the Dutch extended their lead to 7 points, 22-15 with 3 minutes remaining in the first half. But the Chix got hot to end the first half, finishing the 2nd quarter om a 10-0 run to lead 25-22 at half. The Chix continued their strong play in the 3rd quarter, extending their lead to 6 points, 43-37 heading into the final period.. In the 4th quarter, the Dutch scored the first 8 points to regain the lead 45-43. But the Chix went on the final run of the game, outscoring the Dutch 17-1 to pull out the 60-46 win.
Leading the Chix in scoring was Senior BJ Walker, who tallied a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Will Drnek scored 16 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, added 4 steals and dished out out 3 assists. Junior Caleb Claerbaut just missed a double-double with 10 points, 9 rebounds and blocked 4 shots. Senior Will VerSteeg scored 5 points and Senior Mickey Voss added 3 points. Senior Quincy Thome scored 2 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, dished out 2 assists and added 2 steals.
With the win, the Chix improve their overall record to 9-6, and 4-1 in the OK Black Conference play. The Chix are back in action on Saturday night, January 25 at 6:30 pm at Zeeland West.

Zeeland East defeated Holland 60-46 in conference game. Zeeland East opened the game going up 9-0. Holland responded hitting 4 three pointers in the first quarter. East maintained a steady pace with Holland throughout the first half. East was trailing 15-22 with 2 minutes left in the half, East managed to nail a couple 3’s and draw a couple fouls to answer back with an electric 10 point finish to the half. Zeeland East managed to keep Holland's shooters away from 3-point range. Coming into the 4th quarter the game was tight up until Sr. leader, B.J Walker, ended Holland’s night with a driving layup and a foul, along with a 3-pointer from Jr. Caleb Claerbaut going up 4 points with a minute left forcing Holland to foul. “The game was tight all the way around, and the start wasn't what we anticipated, towards the end we began to connect better as one which showed us the outcome we were looking for.” said Walker. East would continue to rack up the points from all the fouls and end the game confidently. “Our guys were able to preserve through some adversity against a really good Holland team, and we were able to end the game with an explosive offensive and defensive 4th quarter.” Coach Jeff Carlson said after their road win.
East advanced to 9-6 for the season and will play Unity Christian January 31st in their second game against the Crusaders this season.
