Zeeland East Grabs Lead In Sixth Inning For Victory Over Covenant Christian

Zeeland East took the lead late in the game in an 8-7 victory over Covenant Christian on Friday. The game was tied at seven with Zeeland East batting in the bottom of the sixth when Katie Carlson tripled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

Covenant Christian scored four runs in the sixth inning, but Zeeland East still managed to pull out the victory. Covenant Christian batters contributing to the big inning included Meulenberg, Velthouse, and Miedema, all driving in runs in the inning.

Covenant Christian got things started in the first inning when VanOverloop singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.

Reese Gruppen took the win for Zeeland East. Gruppen surrendered one run on one hit over one inning, walking zero. Riley Gruppen threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Gruppen recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Zeeland East.

VanOverloop took the loss for Covenant Christian. The bulldog went six innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits and striking out three.

Madalyn Hickey started the game for Zeeland East. The ace went five innings, allowing six runs on six hits, striking out two and walking zero

Zeeland East totaled nine hits. Gruppen and Ali Holman all managed multiple hits for Zeeland East. Holman and Gruppen each collected three hits to lead Zeeland East.

VanDenTop went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Covenant Christian in hits.
