Zeeland East had no trouble on offense today, winning big over Mona Shores 16-4 and 18-2 in their doubleheader. The Chix launched SIX home runs in the two games, including three by freshman Megan Kuzma.
The Chix opened up scoring early when Kuzma hit a leadoff home run to start the game. Reese Gruppen started the game for Zeeland East. She went two innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out one. Katie Carlson was the winning pitcher for the Chix. She came on in relief and went five innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out seven and walking one.
Zeeland East's offense tallied five runs in the seventh inning to put the game away for good. The big inning was lead by RBI singles by Kuzma and Reese Gruppen and then a home run by Katie Carlson. The Chix hit four home runs in the game. Kuzma put another one out in the second inning to go along with her leadoff homer. Emme Meyering hit one deep in the third inning. Zeeland East collected 16 hits in the contest. Kuzma, Ella Hathaway, Carlson, Meyering, and Gruppen all managed multiple hits for the Chix.
The offensive onslaught continued in game two as Zeeland East won 18-2 in three innings. The Chix opened up the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single by Katie Carlson, followed by a run on an error and an RBI single by Emme Meyering. Zeeland East continued to pour it on, scoring six runs in the second inning and nine runs in the third. The Chix hit two home runs in the game. Meyering hit a grand slam in the second inning to give the Chix a big lead, her second home run on the day. Megan Kuzma hit a walkoff 3-run homer in the third inning to end the game, her third of the day! Zeeland East tallied 13 hits in the game. Mackenzie Ruimveld, Ella Hathaway, Carlson, Kuzma and Meyering all had multiple hits to lead the Chix.
Reese Gruppen started again in the circle for Zeeland East. Throwing one inning, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out one. Katie Carlson came on in relief and picked up the win for the Chix. She threw two perfect innings, allowing zero runs on zero hits, striking out two and walking none.
With the two wins today Zeeland East improves to 17-5 on the season! They are back in action this Friday for a non-conference doubleheader with Thornapple Kellogg.
