Chix Baseball Beats West Ottawa 6-5

Posted on 05/15/2025 | ZESPN Student Journalist Hannah Hansen

The East baseball team faced the Panthers of West Ottawa in an intense game and came out on top with a score of 6 - 5 on Wednesday night. The boys were able to get on the board in the second when Quincy Thome singled, scoring 2 runs. Thome went 2 for 4. The Chix added to their lead in the third with the help of Jr. Derek Baxter with a ground out and Jr. Peyton Davis with a triple, both scoring one run. West Ottawa tied the game in the fourth, but the Chix responded with a triple, scoring another run. Sr. Jalen Nesbit threw for 4 innings, and Sr. Eli Neinhuis was able to lead the Chix to their win over West Ottawa. When asked about the game, Coach Matt Sattler said, “It was a solid game. Our guys manufactured at the plate. We had a couple of big hits at the right times, and Nesbitt and Neinhuis both pitched really well, limited their walks, pitched to contact, with only a couple errors, which gives a recipe for a win.” Thome added, “it was a great game, it was an OK Red opponent,it was a tough team, we have a possibility to see them in districts, but it was a great team win for us today.”

Zeeland East Chix Dominate Both Sides of the Diamond

The East baseball boys played against the Unity Christian Crusaders and won with a score of 4 - 0 at home on Thursday, May 8. When asked about their game, Head Coach Matt Sattler mentioned that “it was a beautiful game from top to bottom, Soph. Mason Raade threw a bunch of strikes. We made zero errors, and we just ate up every ground ball and fly ball, which is all a recipe for a win, great job by all of our guys.” Jr. Derek Baxter said, “I think we came out really hot, our offense and defense flowed phenomenally, played sound hitting, defense was awesome, very few mistakes if any at all, just a great effort.” Jr. Ryan Kuzma went 3 and 3 with 1 homerun in the fifth inning. With zero mistakes on both sides of the ball, the Chix were able to put down the Crusaders and take the series win.

Chix Bats Earn Them Sweep of Unity

Zeeland East Varsity baseball faced off in a doubleheader last night at Unity Christian. The boys narrowly secured their first win against the Crusaders 4-3, and took a safe lead in their second, ending with a score of 8-5.

Coach Matthew Sattler stated, “Quincy really brought it to the table in last night's games. He got two hits in our first game and three in our second. One of which was a double. He put two runs on the board in our second game and helped us take a lead on the Crusaders.”

Jr. Peyton Davis batted 4 for 4 in the first game, two of those hits were triples. Jr. Cam Jaworowski hit a bunt RBI and later on, landed on first base with a hit. The first game ended with 13 hits.

Sr Quincy Thome Commented, “We played really well in both games. Unity is a tough team, but we just kept battling until we came out on top. Max Mulder and Derek Baxter really helped us out from the mound.” Sr. Max Mulder pitched 6 and ⅔ innings, he struck out 9 Unity Christian batters, and only allowed 3 runs on 8 hits. Thome pitched the rest of game 1, earning their final out with a throw to shortstop. Jr. Derek Baxter pitched 5 innings in game two, he struck out 6 batters and allowed 1 run on 5 hits. Soph. Gavin Weighmink came in as relief and pitched a solid last two innings.

East Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Holland

Posted on 04/22/2025 | ZESPN Student Journalist Daveyana Phasavo

Zeeland East Baseball hosted a doubleheader against Holland, winning both games. The first game ended with a score of 12-5, and the second game with an 11-8. The Chix had a strong start in the first game when Jr. Ryan Kuzma hit a home run in the 2 inning. At the start of the second game, Holland scored first in the second inning, but the Chix tied it  3-3 at the top of the 3rd inning. Jr Cameron Jaworowski said, “Starting slow, having a tired game 3-3 in the 3rd inning, but coming into the 4th, we fell apart, allowing Holland to score 5 runs. Once we got the last out, our energy came back after scoring 8 runs, putting us in the lead,” Coach Matt Sattler said. “It felt pretty good in the first 5 innings of the first game. Being up 12-0, our guys hit the ball pretty well. Mason Raade was great on the mound; he threw a lot of strikes, keeping them off balance. But Holland crept back up, making us play a few more innings, which I didn’t love. All in all, this early in the year, they were solid.” During the second game, the Chix were down until the 4th inning when Jrs. Derek Baxter was able to get on base and a double hit by Jaworowsk, allowing the Chix to stay in the game, and score 7 more runs
