Boys Junior Varsity Basketball vs. Allendale High School

Lose: 51 - 57
The Chix traveled to Allendale to play the Falcons on Thursday night in the 2022-23 season finale. The 1st quarter went back and forth, with Allendale leading 15-14 at the quarter's end. In the 2nd quarter, the Chix played great defense and got the offense rolling and the Chix outscored the Falcon 18-6 to lead 32-21 at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, the Falcon ramped up the defense, limiting the Chix to 4 points and trimming the Chix lead to 2 points heading into the 4th Quarter. The 4th quarter was hard-fought and close. The Chix were down by 2 points with under 30 seconds to play, Quincy Thome stole the ball and Eli Walcott made a layup to tie the score and force the game into OT at 45-45. But Allendale jumped out quickly in the OT and knocked off the Chix 57-51.

The Chix end the season with a 13-8 overall record. In OK Green conference games, the Chix were 11-3, which was good for 2nd place in the conference. The team greatly improved throughout the season. After starting the season 2-6, the Chix won 11 of their final 13 games!
A big thank you goes out to Coach Dreyer and his assistant coach Ramadahi for all of the time and effort invested in this group of young men. The future is very bright with this talented group of players.

The Chix hosted the Wyoming Wolves on Monday night for their final home game and final OK Green conference game of the 2022-23 season. The game was a make-up from Thursday night's postponement from the ice storm.
The Chix started the game slowly as Wyoming led 8-3 late in the 1st Quarter. But the Chix heated up, scored the last 6 points of the quarter, and led 9-8 after 1Q. In the 2nd Qtr, the Chix continued their scoring run, scoring the first 10 points of the quarter and the Chix led 23-12 at halftime. In the 2nd half, the offense got going as the Chix scored 40 points and the Chix won the game 63-53.
With the win, the Chix record improves to 13-7 overall and 11-3 in the OK Green, good for 2nd Place in the conference behind Muskegon. After starting the season 0-2 in the OK Green conference games, the Chix won 11 of the next 12 conference games to place 2nd in the conference.

Win: 74 - 44
The Chix returned home on Tuesday evening to host the Red Hawks from Grand Rapids Union High School. The Chix got off to a fast start and never looked back. The Chix led 19-13 after the 1st quarter. In the 2nd quarter, the defense took hold, allowing only 3 points, and the Chix led 33-16 at halftime. The offense really came to life in the 2nd half, scoring 41 2nd half-points and a season-high 74 in the 74-44 victory.
All 12 players saw significant playing time and 11 of the 12 players scored in the game. Max Mulder and Caleb Claerbaut each scored 11 points, while Jacob Vera scored 10. Eli Walcott and Mickey Voss each scored 8 points. Owen Ver Steeg added 7 points, Quincy Thome scored 6 points and Caden Arendsen scored 5, Kyle Monie scored his first 4 points of the season, Micah Voight and Noah Tillmann rounded out the scoring with 2 points each.
With the win, the Chix record improves to 12-7 on the season, 10-3 in OK Green league play. The Chix play their final home game this Thursday as they host the Wyoming Wolves. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm.

Win: 50 - 38
The Chix wrapped up their 3 game road trip on Friday night at Muskegon Mona Shores. The Chix played tough defense and dominated the offensive glass to knock off the Sailors 50-38.
The game started slow offensively for both teams; with the Chix leading 7-6 after one quarter. The Chix went on a 10-0 run to start the 2nd qtr to take control of the game and led 25-18 at halftime. In the 2nd half, the Sailors kept it close, but the Chix knocked down some free throws in the 4th qtr when the Sailors were forced to foul and the Chix pulled out the road win.
With the win, the Chix record improves to 11-7 overall and 9-3 in OK Green conference play.

The Chix took to the road as they played the Reeths-Puffer Rockets on Tuesday night. The Chix came out hot in the first half and led the game 29-20 at halftime. Cold shooting and turnovers plagued the Chix in the 3rd quarter. The Chix were outscored 15-4 in the period and were down 35-33 going into the 4th quarter. But the Chix recovered, played sound defense, and knocked down some clutch shots, many at the free throw line, to outscore the Rockets 23-13 in the 4th quarter to pull out the 56-48 victory.

The Chix traveled to Holland to take on the Holland High Dutch on Thursday night. The Chix came out fast and led 14-3 after the first quarter. The Chix built on their lead in the 2nd quarter behind the hot shooting of Will Stehouwer and Max Mulder. Caleb Claerbaut banked in a half-court shot as time expired in the 2nd quarter and the Chix led 39-15 at halftime. In the 2nd half, the Chix continued their strong play. The Chix were able to get all their players into the game in the 4th quarter and the Chix won the game 61-29.

The JV Boys hosted the Muskegon Big Reds on Tuesday evening. In the first half, the Chix battled tough with the Big Reds and only trailed by 9 at the halftime break. But in the 2nd half, the Big Reds were challenging to hold down and the Big Reds pulled away to hand the Chix a 74-43 loss. The loss broke the Chix 6-game win streak. Overall, the Chix record is 8-7, 6-3 in the OK Green

The Chix Boys JV basketball team traveled down the path to take on the Zeeland West Dux on Thursday night. The Chix played a strong game and scored a 50-38 victory. The Chix went on an 11-0 run to end the first quarter to lead 17-5 after one quarter. The Chix continued their strong play in the 2nd quarter and led the game 30-15 at halftime. The Chix continued their strong play in the 2nd half to pull out the 12-point win.

The Chix took to the road on a cold, snowy Thursday night as they traveled to play the Wyoming Wolves. The Chix got off to a fast start, leading 18-11 after the first quarter. The Chix extended their lead in the 2nd quarter to 11 points and led 31-20 at halftime. Midway through the 3rd quarter, Wyoming was able to trim the Zeeland East lead down to 4 points, but the Chix responded and extended their lead back to 9 points at the end of the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter, the Chix pulled away and won the game 62-47.

The JV Boys Chix hit the road for their first of 3 consecutive OK Green road games on Tuesday night to take on the Union Red Hawks. The Chix came on hot in the 1st quarter, knocking down six 3-pt shots, and took a 21-10 lead after the first quarter. Union chipped away at the Chix lead in the 2nd quarter, but the Chix held a 30-24 advantage at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, the Chix built their lead back to double-digits and they pulled away in the 4th quarter to win 63-39. The win was the first road win of the season for the Chix and evens the Chix overall record at 6-6, with a 4-2 record in OK Green conference play.

Win: 39 - 34
The Boys JV team hosted the Mona Shores Sailors on Friday night in the last game of their 3-game home stand. In the first half, the game was low scoring and the Sailors led 16-13 at halftime. In the 2nd half, the offense picked up and the defense held rigid. The Chix outscored the Sailors 26-18 and came away with a 39-34 victory. The win is the third straight for the Chix, improving their record to 5-6 overall, and 3-2 in the OK Green.
Leading the way for the Chix was the inside-outside duo of Max Mulder and Jacob Vera, Max scored 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, while Jacob scored 12 points on 4 3-point shots and grabbed 3 rebounds. Quincy Thome scored 6 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists. Caleb Claerbaut added 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists.
The Chix hit the road for 6 of their next 7 games. On Tuesday, the Chix travel to Grand Rapids to play the Union Red Hawks. Game time should be around 5:30 pm.

The Chix hosted the Muskegon Reeths-Puffer Rockets Tuesday evening and the Chix held on for a 56-53 win. The lead went back and forth between the team in the first half, but the Chix held a slim 2-point lead at halftime, 30-28. In the third quarter, the Chix offense exploded to outscore the Rockets 22-11, and the Chix by 13 points heading into the 4th Quarter. But in the 4th Quarter, the Rockets put down on the defensive clamps and whittled the Chix lead down to a single point. But 2 clutch free throws by Eli Walcott with just a couple of seconds to play provided some cushion for the Chix to pull out the victory.

The JV Boys Basketball team hosted the Holland High Dutch on Thursday night in the nightcap of a Freshman/JV Boys & JV Girls triple-header and came away with a 60-43 win. The Chix started slowly and trailed 16-8 after the first quarter. The Chix got the offense rolling and finished the 2nd quarter in a flurry, scoring the last 9 points to lead by 4 at halftime 27-23. In the 3rd quarter, both teams played pretty even with each other, but Holland was able to reduce the Chix lead to 1 point heading into the 4th quarter. But in the 4th quarter, they pulled away, outscoring the Dutch 18-2 to pull away with a 17-point margin of victory. The win improved the Chix record to 3-6 Overall and 1-2 in OK Green contests.

The Chix traveled to Muskegon on Tuesday night to play the Big Reds. The Chix got down early and lost 72-38. Jacob Vera and Max Mulder each scored 8 points. Mickey Voss had 6 points and 6 rebounds.

The Chix hosted the Dux Thursday night. The Chix got off to a good start and led 14-12 after 1 quarter. The Chix extended their lead to 20-14 in the 2nd quarter. But the Dux finished the 2nd quarter strong, knocking down some shots and holding the Chix to just 1 point the rest of the quarter and Dux led 25-21 at halftime. In the 2nd half, the Dux continued their strong play, knocking down 3 pt shots and playing sound defense and Chix fell to their rival 56-42.
The Chix were led in scoring by Jacob Vera, who scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Caleb Claerbaut scored 9 points, grabbed 5 boards, dished out 3 assists, and blocked 3 shots. Owen Ver Steeg scored 8 points and handed out 4 assists. Max Mulder scored 6 points and grabbed 3 rebounds while Quincy Thome chipped in with 5 points, 4 boards, and 3 steals.

The JV team took on the Coopersville Broncos Thursday afternoon on the 2nd day of the Zeeland Christmas Classis and came away with a 52-39 win. The Chix trailed by 1 at halftime, 22-21, but came out quickly in the 2nd half to retake the lead. Coopersville cut the Chix lead to 3 points early in the 4th quarter, but the Chix ended the game on a 10-0 run to secure the win.
Leading the Chix in scoring was Jacob Vera, who scored 14 points, which included 2 3-point shots and 6 for 6 from the free throw line. Jacob also added 3 rebounds and 5 steals. Caleb Claerbaut added 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. Owen Ver Steeg scored 10 points, with 3 assists, and 4 steals. Quincy Thome chipped in with 8 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists. Mickey Voss scored 4 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
The Chix are off until next Thursday, January 5, when they host the Zeeland West Dux.

JV team took to the floor this afternoon against the Whitehall Vikings in the Zeeland Christmas Classis. The Chix offense got off to a slow start, scoring only 7 points in the 1st quarter, and trailing 9-7 after one quarter. Both teams got their offenses going in the second quarter, but Whitehall outscored the Chix 23-18 in Q2 and the Chix trailed 32-25 at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, the Chix opened the period on a 10-0 run to take the lead and outscored the Vikings 15-3 to lead the game heading into the 4th quarter by 5. The Chix extended their lead to double digits, with just a few minutes to play. The Vikings cut the Chix lead down to 3 points with less than a minute to play, but timely free throws by the multiple Chix players helped the Chix pull out a 61-55 win.

The JV team is back in action on Thursday afternoon at 2 pm in the Christmas Classic at Zeeland West as the Chix take on the Coopersville Broncos.

Lose: 59 - 71
The JV team traveled to Holland to take on the West Ottawa Panthers Tuesday night. The Chix got off to a quick start, pounding the ball inside to Max Mulder and Mickey Voss and the Chix led 17-10 after the 1st quarter. The Chix extended their lead to 27-17 mid-way through the 2nd Qtr, but the Panthers finished the first half on a 15-2 run to lead the Chix 32-29 at halftime. The Panthers extended their lead in the 3rd qtr to double digits. The Chix battled back, getting within 6 points a couple of times in the 4th Qtr, but West Ottawa made some key shots and free throws late in the game to hold on and win 71-59.
The Chix were led in scoring by the inside duo of Mickey Voss and Max Mulder and the outside shooting of Jacob Vera. Mickey scored 14 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and blocked 2 shots, while Max scored 13 points and grabbed 7 boards. Jacob Vera added 14 points, knocking down a couple of 3-pointers. Caleb Claerbaut scored 9 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and had 2 steals, while Quincy Thome scored 5 points, dished out 10 assists, and grabbed 6 boards. Owen Ver Steeg added 4 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals for the Chix
The Chix are off until Wednesday, Dec 28, when the Chix host Whitehall in the Zeeland Classic. The game tips off at 3:30 pm.

Lose: 45 - 51
The JV team was back in action Tuesday night as they hosted the Hamilton Hawkeyes. In a physical, hard-played game, the Chix lost another close game, 51-45. The Chix came out hot and took a 10-2 lead midway through the 1st Quarter. Hamilton then went on a 24 - 10 run over the remainder of the first half to lead 26 to 20 at halftime. The Chix battle back to tie the game at 41-41 late in the 4th quarter, but the Hawkeyes made a couple of big shots to hold on for the win.
Leading the team in scoring was Caleb Claerbaut, who scored 15 points (4-7 from 3 pt). Jacob Vera added 10 points and 8 rebounds. Quincy Thome scored 9 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and added 6 steals for the Chix, while Owen Ver Steeg chipped in with 5 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals.
The Chix are back in action next Tuesday as they travel to West Ottawa.

Lose: 50 - 54
The Boys JV team hosted the Jenison Wildcats in their season-opening home game of the year. The Chix got off to a slow start and trailed by 5 points after the first quarter. The team battled back in the second quarter and trailed by 1 point at haft. In the 3rd quarter, the Chix took the lead and led by 3 points going into the 4th quarter. The Chix held a one-point lead late in the game but a Jenison player made a 3-point shot to give the Wildcat the lead and the Chix fell 54-50.
Leading the Chix in scoring was Caleb Claerbaut. Caleb scored 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Owen Ver Steeg scored 9 points and dished out 5 assists. Jacob Vera scored 7 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and had 3 assists. Max Mulder and Caden Arendsen each scored 6 points, while Mickey Voss filled the stats sheet with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 block shots.
The JV team fell to 0-2 on the season. They are back in action next Tuesday at home against the Hamilton Hawkeyes.

Lose: 42 - 50
The JV team opened the 2022-23 season on the road Tuesday night at the Holland Civic Center against the Holland Christian Maroons. The Chix were cold from the field to start the game and trailed 17-5 after the 1st Qtr. The Chix heated up in the 2nd Qtr and only trailed by 8 at halftime. In the 2nd half, the Chix battled tough against the Maroons, but could not get the lead. The Maroons made enough plays to pull out a 50-42 win over the Chix.
The Chix were led by the inside, outside combination of Max Mulder and Caleb Claerbaut. Caleb scored 16 points on the strength of four 3-pt shots. Max was dominant down low, with 13 points and 5 rebounds. Owen Ver Steeg added 8 points, 7 assists, & 5 steals while Jacob Vera tallied 3 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and dished out 3 assists.
The JV team is back in action Friday night, December 9 with their home opener against Jenison Wildcats. Game time is approximately 5:30 after the Freshman game is finished.
