Boys Varsity Basketball vs. Zeeland West High School

The Chix traveled to West Ottawa High School on Friday night to play the Zeeland West Dux in the District Final.  In front of large, energetic crowd, the Dux won their first Boys Basketball District title over the Chix 53-42. The Dux got off to a fast start against the Chix and led 12-0 midway through the First Quarter.  The Chix settled down and closed the quarter on a 6-4 run to trail the Dux 16-6 after 1 period of play.  The Chix continued the comeback theme, outscoring the Dux 14-10 in the 2nd quarter to trail only by 6 points heading into Halftime, 26-20.  The Dux played stingy defense in the 3rd quarter, limiting the Chix to only 6 points and the Dux extended their lead 10 points, 36-26.  In the 4th quarter, the Dux pulled away to open up an 18 point lead late in the game.  But the Chix didn't show any quit and battled to trim the Dux lead to 11 points, but time ran out with the Dux winning the game, 53-42. Leading the way for the Chix in his last game in the brown and gold uniform was Senior Layne Risdon, who tallied 17 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and added 3 steals.  Junior BJ Walker added 11 points and 4 rebounds, while Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut scored 8 points, going 2-2 behind the 3-point arch.  Freshmen Will Drnek continued his strong late season play with 4 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists.  Junior Will VerSteeg chipped in with 2 free throws for 2 points for the Chix. With the loss, the Chix season is now finished.  The Chix final record was 10-14 overall, 6-8 in OK Green conference play.  Thank you to all of the fans who supported the Chix this season.  The future is bright for the basketball program and the team looks forward to working hard in the off season to improve and come back better next year.

Win: 71.00 - 66.00
The Chix opened MHSAA District play at Holland West Ottawa High School on Wednesday evening by taking on the Grand Haven Buccaneers from the OK Red Conference.  In front of the large crowd, the Chix overcame a slow start to beat the Bucs 71-66 and advanced to the District Final on Friday evening. The Chix came out cold in the first quarter, with Grand Haven starting the game on a 12-2 run.  But the Chix settled down late in the quarter and trailed 14-6 heading into the 2nd Quarter.  In the 2nd Quarter, the Chix started to heat up and outscored Grand Haven 17-9 and to tie the game at 23 at halftime.  In the 2nd Half, the Bucs came out fast and scored the first couple buckets of the 2nd half to regain the lead.  But the Chix were not phased, as they caught fire from the field and the free throw line.  The Chix took their first lead of the game on a thunderous BJ Walker dunk to lead 31-29 midway through the 3rd quarter.  The Chix stingy defense forced multiple Grand Haven turnovers and the Chix extended their advantage to 10 points, 45-35 heading into the final quarter.  In the 4th quarter, Grand Haven would not back down.  The Bucs hit numerous contested 3-point shots, and pressured the Chix defensively in an attempt to trim the Chix lead.  The Chix made some timely buckets and knocked down many free throws, never giving up the lead to pull out the hard fought victory. The Chix were led by the dynamic duo of Senior Layne Risdon and Junior BJ Walker in the victory.  Walker scored 24 points, going 14-16 from the free throw line, adding 5 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.  Risdon scored 23 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and had 5 steals in the victory.  Junior Jacob Vera scored 9 points, grabbed 3 rebounds and dished out 3 assists while Freshman Will Drnek scored 8 points, grabbed 7 boards and added 2 assists for the Chix.  Junior Will VerSteeg chipped in with 5 points and a steal for the Chix. The Chix are back in action Friday night for the District championship at West Ottawa High School against Zeeland West.  Tickets can be purchased through the GoFan App as cash is not accepted to purchase tickets.  Come out and cheer on the Chix as they make the push to win the District title.

The Chix hosted Muskegon Mona Shores on Friday night for Senior night or Layne night as was worn by the players on their pregame warm-up shirts.  The Chix honored their lone senior, Layne Risdon, before the game, who is a 3 year varsity player.  The game was close throughout the first half, with Mona Shores leading 12-10 after the first quarter and 27-23 at half.  Mona Shores inched their lead ahead by 1 point in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Chix 15-14 in the 3rd quarter.  But in the 4th quarter, Mona Shores hit some timely 3-point shots and knocked down some free throws to pull out a 70-53 win over the Chix. Leading the offense for the Chix was their senior star, Layne Risdon.  Risdon scored 23 points and dished out 5 assists.  Junior BJ Walker scored 15 points and grabbed 4 rebounds.  Freshmen Will Drnek added 6 points and 5 assists.  Quncy Thome added 3 points and 3 rebounds while Caleb Claerbaut chipped in with 2 points and 6 rebounds. This game was the final game of the regular season as the Chix now head off to district playoff play at Holland West Ottawa High School Wednesday evening.  The Chix will open up District play by taking on the Grand Haven Buccaneers.  Come out Wednesday evening and support your Chix as they make a playoff push.

Lose: 66.00 - 71.00
The Chix opened their final homestand of the 2023-24 season as they hosted the 1st place in the OK Green conference, Muskegon Reeths Puffer Rockets, on Tuesday night.  In an exciting back-and-forth game, the Chix fell to the Rockets 71-66.  The Chix started quickly and led 17-9 at the end of the 1st Quarter.  The Rockets clamped down defensively in the 2nd Quarter, scoring the last 6 points of the period, and the game was tied at 24 at halftime.   To start the 3rd quarter, the Chix offense came alive, going on a 14-7 run to take a 7 point lead midway through the stanza, but the Rockets ended the quarter with a flury and the game was tied 46-46 going into the 4th quarter.  Early in the final quarter, the Chix built a 5 point lead, but Rockets battled back to tie the score at 57.  The Rockets went on a 10-0 run late in the quarter to pull away and the Chix fell 71-66. Leading the way individually for the Chix was senior Layne Risdon.  Risdon recorded another double-double on the season, with 26 points and 15 rebounds.  Risdon also added 3 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocked shots.  Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut scored 13 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and added 4 assists.  Junior BJ Walker added 11 points and grabbed 5 boards.  Junior Jacob Vera added 7 points for the Chix. The Chix host their final home game of the season this Friday night as the Muskegon Mona Shore Sailors travel to Zeeland.  Come out for Senior night, as we honor our only senior, Layne Risdon.  Game time is scheduled for 7 pm.

Win: 52.00 - 48.00
The Chix traveled to Holland High School to take on the Dutch on Friday night.  In a game of runs, the Chix won 52-48.  The Dutch jumped out to a 7-2 lead midway through the 1st Qtr,  After a Chix timeout, the Chix went on a 14-5 run to end the quarter and the Chix held a 16-12 lead.  The Chix started off the 2nd quarter strong, going on a 11-3 run to extended their lead to 27-15.  But the Dutch battled back to trim the Chix lead to 9 points, 31-22 at halftime.   In the 2nd half, the Dutch started quick and trimmed the Chix lead to 37-33.  But the Chix ended the 3rd quarter on a 9-1 run to lead 46-34 going into the 4th quarter.  In the 4th Quarter, the Dutch clamped down defense and limited the Chix to only 6 points in the quarter.  The Dutch also knocked down some timely shots to trim the Chix lead to 2 points with less than a minute to play.  But Junior Will Ver Steeg knocked down 2 clutch free throws to seal the win for the Chix. Individually, Senior Layne Risdon led the charge for the Chix with a double-double.  Risdon scored 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and blocked 4 shots.  Junior BJ walker scored 12 points, grabbed 3 rebounds and added 4 steals.  Jr. Jacob Vera scored 7 points and dished out 2 assists. The Chix are home for the final 2 games of the season.  The Chix open the week on Tuesday with the Reeths Puffer Rockets.  Tip time is 7 pm or 20 minutes after the JV game is complete. .

The Chix traveled to Muskegon Tuesday night to face a first-place team in the OK Green Conference, the Muskegon Big Reds.  The Big Reds jumped out to a 12-0 lead to start the game and led 24-7 after the first quarter and 37-23 at halftime.  The Chix battled the Big Reds throughout the game, but it wasn't enough and the Chix fell to the Big Reds, 79-49. Individually for the Chix, Junior BJ Walker led the team in scoring, with 14 points.  Walker added 3 rebounds and 2 assists for the Chix.  Senior Layne Risdon scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.  Freshman Will Drnek added 10 points while Junior Mickey Voss chipped in with 5 points on the evening. The Chix travel to Holland High School this Friday night for Varsity night at the Holland High Dutch Dome.  The Girls Varsity teams start the action at 5:30 pm.  The Holland and Zeeland Unified teams are up next after the Girls game concludes, with tip time approximately at 6:45 pm.  The Boys Varsity teams wrap up the evening, with the game to start around 7:30 pm.  Come out and make the short trip to Holland to support your Zeeland East teams this Friday night!

The Chix hosted the Zeeland West Dux Friday in front of a packed house.  The Dux jumped out to an early 14-0 lead and led 33-10 at halftime.  In the 2nd half, the Dux started quickly and the Chix had no answers and the Dux won the game 70-43. Leading the Chx in scoring was Juniorr Will VerSteeg, who scored 11 points.  Freshman Will Drnek added 7 points for the Chix. The Chix are back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Muskegon to play the Big Reds,

Win: 66.00 - 48.00
The Chix hosted the Wyoming Wolves on Tuesday evening.  Wyoming jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead to start the game, but the Chix bounced back, scoring the next 7 points to take a 7-6 lead midway through the first quarter..  The Chix continue their strong play to end the quarter and led 17-10 after 1 quarter of play.  In the 2nd quarter, the Chix fought cold shooting & turnovers and led by the slimmest of margins, 28-27 at halftime.  In the 2nd half, the Chix scored the first 9 points of the 3rd quarter and pulled away in the 4th quarter to win the game, 66-48. Individually for the Chix, Senior Layne Risdon came just short of a triple-double, with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 blocked shots  Junior BJ Walker also scored 23 points, knocking down 13-15 shots from the free throw line.  Walker added 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals,  Junior Jacob Vera added 6 points and while fellow Junior Will Ver Steeg chipped in with 5 points in the win. The Chix are back in action Friday night as they host their cross-town rivals, the Zeeland West Dux.  The Varsity Ladies team kick off the evening at 5:30 pm.  A Girls/Boys Unified game is scheduled for 6:45 pm and the Boy Varsity teams take the court at 7:30 pm.  Get to the game early and enjoy some great Zeeland basketball this Friday evening.

The Chix were back in action Friday night as they traveled to Grand Rapids Union High School.  This game is the start of the 2nd half of the OK Green Conference schedule.  The Chix controlled the game from start to finish as the Chix jumped out quickly, leading  21-12 after 1 quarter and 43-21 at halftime.  The Chix extended their lead to 35 points after 3 quarters, leading 67-32, and ended up winning the game, 85-42. All 10 players for the Chix who dressed for the game scored in the win.  Junior BJ Walker led the team in scoring, netting 23 points, 22 of them in the first half.  Walker added 6 rebounds and a steal.  Senior Layne Risdon collected his 6th double-double on the season, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.  Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut added 13 points, 4 boards, and 3 blocked shots while Freshman Will Drnek scored 6 points, grabbed 6 boards and handed out 2 assists.  Also scoring for the Chix were Junior Quincy Thome with 6 points, Junior Mickey Voss with 5 points, Juniors Eli Walcott, Jacob Vera, & Owen VerSteeg scored 4 points each, while Junior Will VerSteeg added 1 point on a free throw, With the win, the Chix level their OK Green conference record at 4 - 4.  Overall the Chix are 7-9 on the season.  The Chix are back home next week, as they host the Wyoming Wolves on Tuesday, February 6 and the Zeeland West Dux in Bird-Bowl 2 on Friday, February 9 for girls and boys varsity night at the Coop.  Come out and support the Chix as they host 2 exciting OK Green Conference opponents next week.

Lose: 68.00 - 74.00
The Chix traveled to Mona Shores high school Friday night to take on the Sailors.  In a back and forth game, the Chix fell in overtime 74-68 to the Sailors.  The Chix took an early 8-2 lead to start the game, but the Sailors battled back to tie the score at 17 at the end of the quarter.  In the 2nd quarter, the Chix jumped to 26-19 lead, but the Sailors went on a 12-2 run the end the quarter and the Sailor led 29-28 at halftime.  In the 3rd quarter, the Sailors started quickly,by scoring the first 6 points of the half, and held a 7 point lead, 35-28.  But the Chix responded and outscored the Sailors 21-10 to end the quarter and the Chix led  49 - 45 going into the final period.  In the 4th quarter, the Chix extended their lead to 12 points, but the Sailors had one last run in them, outscoring the Chix 14-2 over the final few minutes of the quarter to tie the game at 63 at the end of regulation.  In overtime, the Sailors outscored the Chix 11-5 and the Sailors pull out the win. Leading the way for the Chix were dou of Senior Layne Risdon and Junior BJ Walker.  Risdon recorded a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds.  Risdon also added 5 assists and 4 blocked shots.  Walker scored 18 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out 5 assists and added 4 steals.  Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut scored 8 points and dished out 4 assists, while Junior Jacob Vera scored 8 points, knocking down 2 3-pt shots.  Junior Owen Ver Steeg came off the bench to score 4 points, grab 5 rebounds and added 4 assists while Freshmen Will Drnek had 4 points and 4 assists.  Jr Eli Walcott rounded out the scoring by adding 2 points. The Chix conclude their 3 game road trip on Friday, February 2 when they travel Grand Rapids to play the Union Redhawks.  Game time is scheduled for 7 pm, 20 minutes after the conclusion of the JV contest.

Lose: 47.00 - 67.00
The Chix embarked on their first of 3 straight road contests in OK Green Conference action as they traveled to Muskegon to play the first place Reeths Puffer Rockets on Tuesday night.  The Chix started quickly, outscoring the Rockets 8-2 in the early portion of the first quarter behind a couple of 3-pt shots by Senior Layne Risdson.  But the Rockets chipped away and the score was tied at 13 heading into the 2nd Quarter.  In Q2, the Rockets outscored the Chix 16-12 and the Rockets led by 4 heading into halftime 29-25.  In the 2nd half, the Chix ran out gas and the Rockets pulled away with a 67-47 win over the Chix. Leading the way for the Chix was Layne Risdon, who scored 17 points, knocking down three 3-pt shots in the game.  Risdon added 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.  Junior BJ Walker scored 9 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and added 4 assists.  Junior Jacob Vera scored 8 points, while Juniors Mickey Voss and Eli Walcott scored 5 points each for the Chix.  Rounding out the scoring was Junior Owen Ver Steeg, who added 3 points on the night. With the loss, the Chix are now 6 -8 on the season, 3-3 in OK Green Conference play.  The Chix head back to Muskegon on Friday night as they take on the Sailors of Mona Shores.  Game time is approximately 7 pm, 20 minutes after the JV game is completed.

The Chix hosted the Muskegon Big Reds on Monday night.  The game was a make-up from the postponed game last Tuesday due to weather.  In this game for a piece of first place in the OK Green conference, the Chix got out early and led 7-4 mid-way through the first quarter.  The Big Reds battled back to take a 10-9 lead late in the quarter, but the Chix hit a 3-pt shot at the buzzer and the Chix led 12-10 after 1 qtr of play.  In the 2nd quarter, the Big Reds took control by playing stingy pressure defense, outscoring the Chix 11-5, and the Big Reds led 21-17 at halftime.  In the 3rd quarter, the Chix came out hot, outscoring the Muskegon 11-5 to take a 28-26 lead.  But after a timeout, the Big Reds scored the next twelve points to lead 38-28 and finished the 3rd quarter leading 42-30.  Muskegon continued their strong play in the 4th quarter and won the game 62-41. Leading the way for the Chix was Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut, who scored 12 points, knocking down two 3-pt shots and added 2 assists..  Senior Layne Risdon added a double-double, with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Junior Quincy Thome scored 8 points and grabbed 3 rebounds, while Junior BJ Walker scored 7 points and added 3 rebounds.  Junior Jacob Vera scored 3 points, grabbed 5 boards and dished out of 3 assists.. The Chix are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Muskegon to take on the Reeths-Puffe Rockets. The game should tip around 7 pm..

Win: 55.00 - 45.00
The Chix hosted the Holland High Dutch in the nightcap of Friday varsity night.  The Chix took a 12-7 lead after the Q1 and the Chix extended their lead to 7 points at halftime, 25-18.  In the 3rd quarter, the Dutch started chipping away at the Chix lead, and the Chix held a narrow 2 point heading into the 4th quarter, 36-34.  The  Dutch continued their strong play, tying the game at 40 with about 5 minutes to play.  But the Chix finished the game on a 15-5 run and the Chix won 55-45.  With the win, the Chix level their overall record at 6 wins and 6 losses on the season.  In OK Green conference play, the Chix have a  3-1 record. Leading the Chix offense were Senior Layne Risdon and Junior Will Ver Steeg.  Risdon scored 17 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, 7 on the offensive end of the floor while VerSteeg scored 12 points, dished out 3 assists and added 2 steals.  Junior BJ Walker scored 9 points and grabbed 4 rebounds, battling foul trouble most of the game.  Junior Jacob Vera tallied 8 points and grabbed 4 boards, while Junior Quincy Thome stuffed the stats sheet with 6 points,, 4 reb, 3 assists and 4 steals.  Jr Eli Walcott rounded out the scoring with 3 points for the Chix.  Walcott also added 6 rebounds and 3 assists on the night.. The Chix are back in action Monday night as they look to make up the game postponed from last week Tuesday snowy weather.  The top 10 ranked Muskegon Big Reds travel to Zeeland to take on the Chix.  Varsity should tip 20 minutes after the JV game, approximately at 7 pm.  Come out and support the Chix in this important match up in OK Green conference play.

Lose: 47.00 - 48.00
The Chix traveled west across the parking lot to play the Zeeland West Dux in the last game of the quadruple header at Zeeland West High School on Thursday evening featuring Zeeland High School girls, boys, and unified basketball teams.  The game featured two of the first-place teams in the OK Green Conference standings, with each team bringing a 2-0 record in conference play to the matchup. In the first quarter, the Dux got off to a fast start, leading 18-4 late in the quarter.  After a  Chix timeout, the Chix settled down and the Dux led 20-8 after the first quarter of play.  In the 2nd quarter, the defenses took hold and the Chix outscored the Dux 8-6 in the quarter and trimmed their deficit by 2 points, with Zeeland West leading 26-16 at halftime.  In the 3rd quarter, the Chix offense started to click, scoring 15 third-quarter points, while holding the Dux to 12 points in the period and the Chix trailed by 7 points heading into the 4th quarter, 38-31. In the 4th quarter, the Chix started quickly, knocking down their first two 3-point shots of the game, and when Junior BJ Walker slammed home 2 points after a Dux turnover, the Chix took their first lead of the game, 42-41 with 3 minutes to go, stirring the Coop into a frenzy.  But Zeeland West came back and scored on their next possession to regain the lead and were able to get their lead back to 5 points late in the game.  The Chix showed great resilience, and when Senior Layne Risdon knocked down a 3-point shot with under 4 seconds to play, the Chix had trimmed the Dux lead to 1 point.  But Zeeland West was able to run out the clock and the Dux held on for a 48-47 win over the Chix. Individually for Zeeland East, the duo of Layne Risdon and BJ Walker led the charge.  Risdon scored 23 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.  Walker scored 17 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and had 2 blocked shots.  Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut scored 3 points, while Juniors Will Ver Steeg and Quincy Thome each scored 2 points in the game. The Chix are back in action next week with 2 home games.  On Tuesday, the Chix host the first-place in the OK Green and top 10 in the state Big Reds of Muskegon.  Freshmen tip at 4 pm, JV at 5:30 pm and the varsity should tip off around  7 pm.  Come out and cheer on the Chix as they take on the Big Reds.

Win: 78.00 - 56.00
On a cold, snowy Tuesday night, the Chix traveled to Wyoming to play the Wyoming Wolves in their OK Green Road opener.  In the opening quarter, the Chix and Wolves battled back and forth as the score was tied at 12 at the end of 1st qtr.  But in the 2nd qtr, the Chix slowly began to pull away, outscoring the Wolves 18-10 and the Chix led 30-22 at the half.  In the 2nd half, the Chix offense exploded for 48 points.  The Chix knocked down 7 of 11 3-point shots and assisted on 14 2nd-half baskets as they outscored the Wolves 48-34 to win the game, 78-56.  The Chix knocked down 11 3-point shots and assisted on 25 of the 30 shots made in fhe game.  The win levels the Chix Overall record at 5-5.  The Chix are 2-0 in OK Green Conference play. Many individuals contributed to the Chix win.  Junior Jacob Vera scored 21 points, going 6-8 from 3-point range, & grabbed 6 boards.  Junior BJ Walker and Senior Layne Risdon added double-doubles for the Chix.  Walker scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists, while Risdon scored 15 points, ripped down 13 rebounds, dished out 7 assists, and had 3 blocked shots.  Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut tallied 15 points, knocking down 3 3-point shots and added 2 steals.  Junior Eli Walcott scored 7 points and grabbed 4 boards, while Junior Quincy Thome added 2 points to round out the scoring.  Junior Will Ver Steeg didn't score for the Chix, but he helped others to score by dishing out 9 assists in the game. The Chix are back in action Friday night at Zeeland West for Varsity night.  The girls' varsity teams tip off at 5;30 pm.  The Zeeland Unified Boys & Girls teams showcase their talents at 6:45 pm with the boy's game scheduled to start at 7:30 pm.  Come out early and support Zeeland High School athletics on this exciting night of basketball action!

The Chix were back in action Friday night to begin the new year with their OK Green home opener hosting the Grand Rapids Union Red Hawks.  The Chix got off to a fast start and didn't look back in this one, as the Chix led throughout the entire game.  The Chix led 17-5 after the 1st quarter and outscored the Red Hawks 15-2 in the 2nd quarter to lead 32-7 at halftime.  The Chix extended their lead in the 3rd quarter by 7 points, leading the game 48-16 going into the 4th quarter.  Both teams cleared the bench in the 4th quarter, getting all the players some playing time and the Chix closed out the game, winning 64-25. The Chix were led by their dynamic duo of Junior BJ Walker and Senior Layne Risdon.  Walker scored 20 points, and grabbed 8 boards, while Risdon tallied 16 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and added 3 assists and 3 blocked shots.  Junior Owen Ver Steeg had his highest output of the season, scoring 9 points, by going 2-2 from 3-point territory.  Owen's twin brother Will Ver Steeg scored 6 points, while Junior Mickey Voss scored 5 points and blocked 3 shots.  Freshman Isaiah Boonstra chipped in with 5 points and grabbed 7 boards, while Junior Eli Walcott scored 2 points, 4 rebs, and 3 steals.  Junior Jacob Vera tallied a point to round out the scoring the Chix.  Freshmen Will Drnek and Junior Quincy Thome didn't score for the Chix, but they stuff the stats sheets in other areas.  Drnek dished 4 assists, grabbed 2 rebs & added 2 steals, while Thome grabbed 3 boards and added an assist and a steal. The Chix are on the road for next week for both of their games.  On Tuesday, the Chix travel to Wyoming to play the Wolves.  Tip for the varsity contest should be around 7 pm.

Lose: 38.00 - 63.00
The Chix traveled across the parking lot to Zeeland West to take on the Covenant Christian Chargers in the 2nd round of the Zeeland Christmas Classic.  The Chix kept it close early in the game, trailing 16-15 after the 1st quarter.   But the Chargers got hot in the 2nd quarter from 3-point territory and the Chix trailed 37-23 at halftime.  The Chargers extended their lead in the 3rd quarter and the Chix fell to the Chargers 63-38.  The Chix record drops to 3-5 on the season.   Individually for the Chix, Junior BJ Walker scored 11 points, on 8-8 from the FT line.  Senior Layne Risdon added 7 points, and 5 rebounds while Junior Jacob Vera scored 6 points and 6 rebounds.  Junior Will Ver Steeg and Freshman Will Drnek each scored 4 points, while Juniors Owen Ver Steeg and Quincy Thome each scored 2 points in the game. The Chix are off until the new year.  Their next game is the OK Green Conference home opener against Grand Rapids Union on Friday, January 5.  The varsity game should tip around 7 pm.

Lose: 55.00 - 67.00
The Chix hosted the Rockford Rams in the nightcap of the Zeeland Christmas Classic.  After Rockford opened the game by scoring 8 of the first 12 points, the Chix would go on a 10-0 run to take a 14-8 lead.  The Rams would score the next 5 points, but the Chix ended the 1st quarter strong to lead 21-17.  In the 2nd quarter, the Rams and Chix would go back and forth, and at halftime, the game was tied 34-34.  In the 3rd quarter, the Rams stepped up the defensive pressure and got very hot from 3-point range knocking down 5 long-range shots to take a 50-42 lead heading into the 4th quarter. Rockford would build onto their lead and pull out the 67-55 victory over the Chix. Leading the way for the Chix was the duo of Junior BJ Walker and Senior Layne Risdon.  Walker would score 22 points on 8-13 from the floor and 6-6 from the FT line.  Walker added 7 rebounds and a blocked shot.  Risdon had a strong overall game, stuffing the stats sheet with 21 points, including 3-6 from 3-point territory.  Risdon would add 7 boards, 6 assists, and 3 steals.  Junior Jacob Vera hit a couple of 3-point shots in the game and scored 7 points.  Vera also grabbed 4 rebounds.  Freshman Will Drnek and Junior Owen Ver Steeg scored 2 points, while Junior Quincy Thome knocked down a Free Throw to round out the Chix scoring. The Chix are back in action on Thursday at 6 pm as they take on the Chargers from Covenant Christian in the Zeeland Christmas Classic.  All games on Thursday will be played at Zeeland West High School.

The Chx hosted the West Ottawa Panthers Friday night in front of a large and festive Christmas clothes-wearing crowd.  In the first half, the game was up and down the court, with both teams scoring at will  The game was tied up at 23 after the first quarter and the Chix led by 3 points, 40-37 at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, the Chix took control of the game, outscoring the Panthers 24-10 in the period behind the play of Junior Will Ver Steeg, and Senior Layne Risdon, and the Chix led 64-47 after 3 quarters.  The Chix maintained their lead in the 4th quarter and beat the Panthers 77-61. Individually, the Chix had a trio of players score double figures in the game for the Chix.  Layne Risdon scored a season-high 28 points on 11-16 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw stripe.  Risdon added 9 rebounds and 3 steals for the Chix.  Will Ver Steeg scored a career-high 23 points.  Ver Steeg knocked down 8-13 shots from the field and 6-6 from the free throw line.  Ver Steeg also added 6 rebounds.  Junior BJ Walker stuffed the stat sheet with his second consecutive double-double on the season.  Walker scored 14 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, dished out 6 assists, and recorded 3 steals.  Walker was also 6-6 from the Free Throw line as the Chix were a perfect 21-21 from the charity stripe in the game!  Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut scored 8 points, ripped down 4 boards, and blocked 3 shots for the Chix while Junior Quincy Thome chipped in with 4 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.  All 11 players for the Chix saw action on the evening. The Chix are off until next Wednesday, Dec. 27, when they host Rockford in the Zeeland Christmas Classic.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm, 20 minutes after the Zeeland West and Covenant Christian game is finished.

Lose: 72.00 - 74.00
The Chix traveled to Lansing to play the Waverly High Warriors on Tuesday evening.  The Chix started off the game hot from long distance, knocking down 4 three-point shots in the opening quarter, but Waverly was even hotter and the Warriors led 28-17 at the end of the 1st Quarter.  Waverly extended their lead in the 2nd Quarter up to 15 points, but the Chix ended the quarter by scoring the last 6 points and trailed 45-36 at the half.  In the 3rd quarter, the Chix continued to trim the Warrior's lead, and only trailed by 2 points, 56-54 going into the final period.  In the 4th Quarter, the lead went back and forth between the 2 teams.  The Chix took the lead and then extended it to 5 points midway through the quarter, but the Warriors fought back and had a 3 point lead with under a minute to play.  Caleb Claerbaut knocked down a big 3-point shot to even the game at 72.  But Waverly held the ball for a last shot and knocked down a couple of Free Throws with 2 seconds to play to take a 74-72 lead.  The Chix final attempts to tie the game came up short and the Chix fell 74-72.  The Chix showed great heart as they made the big 2nd half comeback.  The team was led by Junior BJ Walker and Senior Layne Risdon, who both recorded double-doubles in the game.  Walker scored 35 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, handed out 4 assists, and added 2 steals.  Risdon scored 18 points, added 13 boards, and dished out 3 assists along with 2 steals.  Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut added 8 points and 6 boards, while Junior Will VerSteeg scored 5 points and added 3 assists.  Junior Quincy Thome chipped in with 4 points on the evening. The Chix are back in action this Friday night at the Coop as the West Ottawa Panthers come and pay a visit. Freshmen tip at 4 pm, JV at 5:30 pm, and the Varsity at 7 pm.  Come to the game dressed in your favorite Christmas gear and help cheer on the Chix!

Lose: 51.00 - 59.00
The Chix hosted the Holland Christian Maroons on Friday night in their home opener.  The Maroons lead the game throughout the first half and led 30-24 at halftime.  Maroons extended their lead to 9 points after the 3rd Qtr and extended the lead to double digits in the 4th.  The Chix made a late push, trimming a 14-point deficit to 6-points with under a minute to play, but the Maroons hung on to win, 59-51.  Junior BJ Walker led the Chix in scoring, tallying 22 points, while grabbing 6 rebounds, dishing out 3 assists & adding 3 steals.  Senior Layne Risdon scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half.  Risdon added 6 rebounds and an assist.  Junior Jacob Vera scored 5 points and grabbed 3 boards, while Junior Will Ver Steeg chipped in with 4 points.   The loss levels the Chix record to 2 wins and 2 losses.  The Chix are back on the road Tuesday night when they travel to Lansing to play Waverly High School.  The game should tip around 6 pm.

The Chix traveled to Jenison for their third consecutive road game to open the season and came away with a 60-40 hard-fought victory over the Wildcats on Friday night.  The Chix started quickly behind the hot shooting of Layne Risdon, who knocked down 3 of the Chix 5 first-quarter 3-point makes, and the Chix led 23-8 at the end of the opening period.  The Chix were able to maintain a double-digit throughout the game behind a strong defensive effort and solid offensive play.  All 10 players who dressed tonight played in the game and contributed to the Chix victory. Individually, the Chix were led by the excellent play of Senior Layne Risdon, who scored 13 of his 22 points in the opening quarter.  Risdon also grabbed 6 rebounds and blocked 4 shots.   Juniors BJ Walker and Eli Walcott had strong all-round games.  Walker scored 11 points, pulled down 5 rebounds, dished out 3 assists and had 3 steals.  Walcott stuffed the stat sheet with 9 points, 6 boards, 3 assists, and 2 steals.  Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut knocked down a couple of 3-point shots for 6 points and added 4 assists and 3 boards while Freshman Will Drnek had a pair of 3-point makes as well for 6 points, along with 4 assists & 3 rebounds.  Junior Mickey Voss added 4 points and 4 rebounds and Freshman Isaiah Boonstra added a bucket. The Chix open the home portion of their schedule next week Friday, December 15, when the Holland Christian Maroons pay a visit to the Coop.  The Freshmen open up the night at 4 pm, with the JV at 5:30 and Varsity to tip at 7 pm.  Come out and support this exciting brand of Chix basketball.

Win: 79.00 - 75.00
The Chix traveled to Hamilton to take on the Hawkeyes Tuesday night.  The  Chix jumped out to a 4-point lead after the First Quarter and extended the lead to 15 points at Halftime, leading 42-27.  The Chix added to their lead in the 3rd Quarter, extending it to 19 points, highlighted by a Quincy Thome half-court buzzer-beater, as the Chix held a 64-45 going into the last quarter.  But the Hawkeyes showed no quit in the 4th quarter, knocking down several 3-point shots to trim the Chix lead to single digits.  But the Chix scored some timely buckets of their own and knocked down enough free throws to pull out a 79-75 win.   Leading the Chix in the victory was the duo of Senior Layne Risdon and Junior BJ Walker.  Risdon scored 26 points and added 6 steals, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists.  Walker scored 22 points, grabbed 6 boards, and dished out 3 assists.  Both Walker and Risdon had highlight-real dunks sending the Chix faithful into a frenzy!   Junior Eli Walcott played a strong all-around game, with 7 points, 7 boards, and 5 assists  Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut scored 7 points, grabbed 4 boards, and dished out 3 assists.  Juniors Jacob Vera & Quincy Thome each scored 6 points, while Freshman Will Drnek scored 5 points, grabbed 4 boards and handed out 6 assists,   The Chix are back in action Friday night, December 8 at Jenison.  Tip-off for the varsity contest should be around 7 pm, after the completion of the JV game.

Lose: 53.00 - 55.00
The Chix opened their season on Saturday afternoon by traveling to Plymouth High School.  The Chix held a 9-8 lead midway through the First Quarter before the Wildcats finished the quarter in a flurry, taking a 16-13 lead at the quarter's end.  The Wildcats extended their lead to 29-21 at Halftime and 41-30 after the 3rd Quarter.  But the Chix made a furious rally in the 4th quarter, trimming the Wildcat's lead to 2 points, with under 10 seconds to play.  After a Wildcat's turnover, the Chix had one last possession to win the game or send it to Overtime, but a last shot came up short and the Chix fell 55-53. Senior Layne Risdon led the Chix in scoring, tallying 22 points on the strength of 7 field goals, including 3 dunks, and 8-9 from the free throw line.  Risdon added 5 steals, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocked shots.  Freshman Will Drnek, in his first varsity game, added 8 points, knocking down two 3-point shots and grabbed 4 rebounds.  Junior Eli Walcott chipped in with 7 points, on 3 for 3 from the field, including a 3-point shot.  Junior Quincy Thome added 5 points, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds, while Sophomore Caleb Claerbaut, in his varsity game, added 5 points, 3 steals, 3 blocked shots, and his first varsity dunk.  Junior BJ Walker scored 4 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, and added 2 assists, while Junior Will Ver Steeg added 2 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. The Chix are back in action next Tuesday night, December 5, as all 3 levels travel to Hamilton to take on the Hawkeyes.  Freshmen kick off the action at 4 pm, JV at 5:30 and Varsity at 7 pm.
